About Google Messages
Google Messages takes the familiar texting app and gives it a more modern feel. Where supported, Rich Communication Services, or RCS, replaces basic SMS and MMS with higher-quality photos and videos, clearer group chats, and useful signals such as typing indicators. That means a birthday photo arrives looking sharp, a group plan stays in one thread, and you can tell when someone is replying without guessing.
The app also lets conversations feel more personal. Custom chat bubble colors and reactions help you respond quickly and add a little character to a routine exchange. A thumbs-up, a laugh, or a heart can acknowledge a message without a full reply, which is especially handy in busy family or work groups where not every note needs a paragraph in response.
Helpful AI features are woven in rather than forced on you. Magic Compose can suggest ways to phrase a message, which is useful when you want a note to sound warmer, clearer, or more concise. You remain in control of what you send, so the tool works best as a starting point for your own words, not a replacement for them.
Privacy and flexibility round out the experience. Personal chats can be protected with end-to-end encryption where available, and you can start a conversation on your phone and continue it on a tablet, computer, or Wear OS device. Availability of RCS varies by region and carrier, and a data plan may be needed, but for many Android users Google Messages is a natural upgrade from plain texting.
