Telegram

Telegram is built around a simple promise: messages should arrive quickly and be available wherever you are. Unlike apps tied to one phone, Telegram stores your chats in the cloud, so you can start a conversation on your phone, continue it on a tablet or computer, and pick it up again later without transferring anything. That sync is the feature most people notice first, especially when they change devices.

Groups and channels give it a different scale from a typical messenger. Groups can hold very large numbers of members, with tools for admins, pinned messages and slow mode to keep busy conversations readable. Channels work the other way: one or more authors broadcast to many subscribers, which suits news updates, clubs, classes and creators who want to reach an audience without a noisy group chat. For more private conversations, Secret Chats offer end-to-end encryption and self-destructing messages on a single device.

File sharing is generous. Photos, videos, documents and other files can be sent without the tight size limits found in many messengers, and your chat history does not eat up phone storage in the same way, because it lives in the cloud. Stickers, animated emoji, photo editing and voice messages add personality, while bots can provide news, reminders, games or tools inside a chat, though their quality varies widely.

Telegram is free and works on Android, iOS, Windows, Mac and Linux, as well as in a browser. It suits people who message across devices, run a community or channel, or simply want a fast, uncluttered messenger that does not tie them to one handset. It is less suited to someone who wants every chat end-to-end encrypted by default, since that protection is specific to Secret Chats. Used with that in mind, it is a flexible and reliable everyday messenger.
